Devon-based traditional and contemporary fiddle music duo, Nick Wyke and Becki Driscoll present a beautifully played and arranged set of tunes on their latest CD 'The Calling'. They are a well-matched duo both in timing and tone and these performances have benn honed by busking tours in Spain and Portugal. They specialise in traditional music from the south-west of England but Becki also contributes a number of her own tunes, while the title track is a joint venture. A few of the traditional tunes are quite well known, including 'Bonnie Kate' and 'The Shepherd's Wife', but some of the other pieces are new to me. Becki's tunes provide the contemporary touch and a couple of highlights of the album - I particularly enjoyed 'Pancakes with Guus' and 'The Last Macaroon'! Throughout, though, it's the flowing arrangements and a real touch a class in their playing that makes this collection a bit special. My only gripe - perhaps a few more details on the tunes could have been provided by the cover notes?
